Michigan Natural Resources Magazine in 1992:

Norris McDowell was gone, as was Susan E. Henry (apparently without a single authored contribution to the magazine). Richard Morscheck was still listed as managing editor; now first on the list with the above two gone, Gijsbert Van Frankenhuyzen was art editor, David Kenyon was photographer, Donna Burt was circulation manager, Cheryl Larreategui; typesetting, Debra Christensen; word processing and Frank Foster; circulation staff.

An ominous announcement appeared in the "Summer" 1992 issue. Invoking the name of Ralph MacMullen, the esteemed DNR director 20 years earlier and refering to unnamed "commentary in the pages of MNR in 1969 and 1970" by MacMullen, Engler-appointed DNR director Roland Harmes informs us that "some changes will be made in the magazine operation over the next several months as we strive for efficiency". Without mentioning what these changes would be, he mentions "I am seeking ... your opinion, which will be helpful in considering other future directions", and closes with an address where these opinions can be sent, care of DNR, Mason Building, Lansing, and closes with "An effective natural resources management message, whether from MacMullen, or others, is too important for any of us to miss.".

This was not the ordinary text note, it was a page under the normal "All Outdoors" header but made to look like a "business letter", typewritten and complete with DNR letterhead and signature. So without any mention of what was being changed (other than obvious editorial staff change), the note was meant to send message - to someone. The codeword "efficiency" meant to the Engler regime the same as "if it doesn't make money it's of no value", and of course only private businesses were able to make money. As we now see, changes would be forthcoming, not just "over the next several months", but throughout the next 7 years of the decade, the magazine's last.

The magazine still cost $9.97 per year for a subscription of 5 issues, and was printed by Pendell Printing with no location given; color separations were by Image Arts, Lansing, and printed on Mead Northcote paper made in Escanaba.
